Proms, Sock Hops, and Special Events

Informal gatherings in the gymnasium to listen to music amplified from an RCA Victor 45-rpm player and to dance in socks was a valued Friday evening event. We remove shoes in those days to avoid scratching the shiny hardwood floor in front of the stage, between the two basketball goals. Of course this same facility was elaborately decorated during a week late in April or early May as classmates prepared for the Junior-Senior Prom, which was the hallmark of the year's special events with perhaps the exception of the Senior trip to Washington D.C.

Proms, Sock Hops, and Special Events is a place for those who remember the Athens We Knew to share photographs of the favorite high school moments. This page will be expanded as material is contributed. To contribute your photograph or story, contact us here.

The class of 1965 took a senior trip in April. We boarded the train in Hinton and went to Washington, D.C., where we toured the Smithsonian. From there, we boarded a bus to New York City. We checked into our hotel and then attended the Easter performance at Radio City Music Hall. The next day, we spent the day at the New York World’s Fair. ---Rose
